Research Affiliates presented on Carbon Data

Research Affiliates visited CFA Society Finland almost exactly a year ago during the “Is Value Dead” morning event we were able to organize as an in-person event. We were delighted to welcome Research Affiliates again to present a virtual webinar “Carbon Data - Green Data or Greenwashing?” on February 2nd 2021.

This important topic raised a lot of interest among our membership and stakeholders, and we had well over 40 people participating. Research Affiliates’ Joe Steidl, CFA, FRM, Client Strategies, Senior Vice President, introduced both Research Affiliates and Vitali Kalesnik, the keynote speaker.

Vitali Kalesnik, Partner and Head of Research, Europe at Research Affiliates, gave a presentation on the findings of his co-written brand new publication Green Data or Greenwashing? Do Corporate Carbon Emissions Data Enable Investors to Mitigate Climate Change. The audience was able to hear about the latest findings on corporate emission data reporting and its role when making investment decisions based on ESG factors. Vitali discussed the different kinds of available GHG data, reported, estimated, and forward-looking. He introduced the many companies providing the data, covered the comparability and the accuracy and also the predictive value of this data.

Following Mr. Kalesnik’s presentation we split the participants into four groups to allow interactive participation and more detailed conversations on the topic. As always time proved to be short and the conversations could have continued a lot longer. Afterwards we were able to have Vitali’s comments on the questions raised in the breakout rooms. Issues discussed among others were the challenges and goals of ESG regulation, and the need for auditing and clear structure on the reporting demands for companies. It was also highlighted that both public and privately owned companies should have the same requirements and formulas in reporting.
